West Coast Swing 1
Pre-requisite: None
West Coast Swing originated from Savoy Style Lindy Hop and dates as far back as the late 1930s. One of the generic names for WCS was "sophisticated swing". In the late 40s Jitterbug was banned from many "serious" dance halls (due to too many injuries to self and others from jumps and kicks, etc.) and Sophisticated Swing began to flourish.
The dance was originally danced to slower tempo traditional swing music. Eventually the standard music evolved into 50s R&B (again, slower tempos). Today you'll find people dancing West Coast Swing to almost every style of groovy music including R&B, soul, disco, and country western.
This slot dance allows for lots of personal expression for both lead and follow, allowing you to style it funky, jazzy, slinky, or swingin'. Known for its fun rhythm changes and playful syncopations this is a great dance to have in your social repertoire!
